Tetsunori Kawana

About the Artist
Trained by internationally renowned filmmaker Hiroshi Teshigahara, former director of the Sogetsu School of Ikebana in Tokyo, Tetsunori Kawana has taught his craft around the world for over thirty years.  The Sogetsu School, founded in 1927, expanded the definition of Ikebana by encouraging personal style in individual creations while maintaining traditional principles, a philosophy that Kawana has carried through to his bamboo installations. In his arrangements, flower and bamboo, he skillfully combines one of the oldest art forms in Japan with his own contemporary designs.
Kawana has completed site-specific bamboo commissions in Japan, Russia, the United States, and most recently at the National Gallery of Victoria, in Melbourne, Australia.  He has also been involved in stage production, serving as art director for the Opera de Lyon in France, the Grand Theatre in Geneva, Switzerland, and a portion of the closing ceremonies of the 1994 Winter Olympic Games in Lillehammer, Norway.
