If you’re a member of the Mint Museum, or even if not, definitely take time this Friday for Mint After 5. Seems like a cool chance to unwind and enjoy a great view of the Queen City from their rooftop party.

Every year I watch sport's most exciting two minutes on TV, but it's not the same as being there to feel the pounding hooves.
This year, I plan to go to Derby Days at the Mint Museum of Art. The event, from 4 to 8 p.m. on the front lawn of the museum, is a fundraiser sponsored by the Young Affiliates of the Mint.
There's live music and, of course, large-screen race coverage. And there's food from area restaurants. Attendees come decked out in sundresses and seersucker suits and, of course, hats.

The Young Affiliates of the Mint held their first Mint After 5 cocktail party last week, and thanks to the warm weather, the rooftop patio of the Mint Museum of Craft + Design was filled with nearly 400 people. Who you'll find there: the future mayor and city leaders of Charlotte. Live music, drinks and food from upscale restaurants are staples at every event. And you can't beat the view of the city skyline.

...a place to start looking for events that can help newcomers get to know this region, and remind old-timers of happenings they won't want to miss. Happy New Year!

There was a sad-looking Santa with an empty vodka bottle in his waistband, a jolly Santa in a full suit and crumbs from what used to be pizza at the Young Affiliates at the Mint holiday party at Brio on Wednesday. So many young professionals turned out that the restaurant opened the tent on the patio to accommodate everyone.

For the longest time, I didn’t attend gala fundraisers because they seemed uptight. But the Great Gatsby and Black & White galas changed my perception.
At these events, Charlotte’s young professionals shed their bank uniforms to party like they do at any uptown club.

The Young Affiliates of the Mint did it again.
Last night’s Black & White Gala was a great party and great fun. The new location at the Forum added a bit of hipness to the annual fundraiser, which raises money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Last night I checked out a happy hour thrown by Young Affiliates of the Mint – a group long known as a way for people ages 21-45 to network, make new friends and get involved in the community.

The Black and White Gala is my new favorite annual party.
It's a Make-A-Wish Foundation benefit organized by Young Affiliates of the Mint Museums.

The Young Affiliates of the Mint (or YAM for short) is one of Charlotte's best young professional networking groups.
